It’s the GPS era: Convergence steers companies on the transformational road
Cornerstone Convergence EMEA has wrapped up once again, and with a new venue, more than 1,200 delegates from 32 countries, and 70 speakers, it may have been our best one yet.
This year’s conference took place on 2 and 3 October at the InterContinental London – The O2 and the newer, bigger venue was met with much excitement from both the Cornerstone team and delegates alike. The larger venue was a fitting choice, with the company celebrating 10 years in Europe this year, and also having doubled its European team sizes in the last three years.
From the outset of day one, two themes shone as the conference focus points: learning and digital transformation. Cornerstone’s CEO, Adam Miller, kicked off, asking the audience to raise their hands if their company was in the midst of a digital transformation project – and promptly asked those who didn’t raise their hand to chat to their colleagues about whether they were right, citing Cornerstone and IDC’s latest study that showed more than 80% of European businesses are going through digital transformation.
The instruction manual is extinct
In a world where the instruction manual is extinct, two key parts of this digital transformation process are user experience and business impact. Any digital changes within companies should make work easier, faster, simpler and more engaging for employees, and ultimately drive more business impact – whether it’s through reducing process admin time or increasing learning opportunities for all.
This latter point was the basis for one of Cornerstone’s announcements at Convergence – Content Anytime, a progressive content subscription service that enables organisations to provide their employees with fresh, modern content that puts them in control of their own career development. This is particularly important now, as research from Deloitte indicates the half-life of workplace skills has fallen to as little as five years, and organisations are finding it difficult to keep up with the pace of change as their employee education and training content becomes quickly outdated.
Delegates attended numerous sessions throughout the days covering these topics and more, with sessions exploring everything from mobile optimisation for learning and the power of data, to gamification and workforce planning. GDPR in particular was a key focus with the new regulations coming into place in May 2018, and Cornerstone’s data protection officer, Jose Rodriguez led a session with Josie Dwyer, our director of product management and market strategy, all about the right to be forgotten and how companies can stay compliant with the new laws.
Cornerstone’s philanthropic initiatives also took the spotlight, with Vincent Belliveau teaming on stage with Joaquim Sanvictores of AIESEC for a presentation on developing young people through global connections. In this speech, Joaquim shared how Cornerstone is supporting the youth-led organisation’s efforts in helping young people develop their leadership potential and gain internships.
The sessions were topped off by keynotes from Karren Brady, Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge, CBE who explored the importance of company culture and how to empower employees; Jan Van Vonno, research manager at the International Data Corporation, who presented the findings of Cornerstone and IDC’s 2017 study, titled Future Business: Unleashing your Talent; and finally serial entrepreneur and founder of Hamilton Bradshaw, James Caan, CBE who shared his thoughts and expertise on how the right talent can transform business and how tech is changing the way companies interact and engage with the workforce.
