Training your workforce so they can realise their potential
Creating a culture of curiosity is of increasing importance in today’s workforce. By encouraging employees to adopt new attitudes, behaviours and competencies, the workplace becomes more inclusive for everyone. And who better than a training professional to drive this change within organisations?
Today’s workforce has different attitudes towards learning. Rather than learning being a one-time thing at the start of employment, today’s employees expect training and learning to be an integral part of their working day. For training professionals, this means that they must implement ongoing training to keep the workforce engaged, and this is a challenge.
Traditional training is no longer effective
Historically, training programmes were made up of complex structures, designed and developed in an ad hoc way, involving little input from the employee. The problem with this traditional type of training is that it over complicates the process, offering little benefit to the employee, putting them at risk of being alienated and disengaged.
The latest survey from Cornerstone and IDC discovered that 46% of respondents favoured on-the-job training, saying that it is the most important employee development practice. With this in mind, training programmes should not be developed with just a focus on learning theory alone, but rather, they should also include practical training courses that allow employees to step outside of the classroom.
Modern content for a modern workforce
From Google searches to short training videos to webinars, training content is everywhere. With so much content out there, it’s important for businesses to spend time identifying the best possible content for their employees and the business. This means ensuring the content we invest in is of high quality, engaging, relevant, intelligent and easily usable.
Creating modern content requires a modern process and an agile structure. So, instead of beginning yet another complex training programme, concentrate on finding the right training content that suits the needs of your employees.
Of course, the ultimate goal is to identify a suitable product, implement it and build a feedback loop to improve the programme as immediately as possible. But if that does not suit your organisation, take the process one step at a time.
