The millennial generation will represent the majority of the workforce
In 2015, people born between 1981 and 1999 are poised to become the new workforce majority and will eventually change the dynamic of the workforce.
Millennials bring a new attitude to work and have unique expectations of employment. They are confident, sociable and extremely tech savvy.
A recent survey by O2 revealed that nearly half of all (49%) 18-30 year olds in the UK believe they have an excellent knowledge of technology; the average across all other age groups is 30%.
UK millennials also see technology as a vital enabler to moving from school to the workplace; with more than three quarters (76%) believing technology makes it easier to get a job. It's clear that technology will play an increasingly important role in the future success of our young people.
Here’s our tips to appeal to this tech savvy generation…
- Provide structure. Millennials are well educated, skilled in technology, very self-confident, able to multi-task, and have plenty of energy therefore make sure goals are clearly stated and progress is assessed. Listen to what is being asked and in return define assignments and access success factors.
- Provide leadership and guidance. Millennials want to look up to you, learn from you as they will be the next leaders. They want to be in on the ‘loop’ of the whole picture so make sure you are involving them in all projects and team discussions.
- Using gamification to boost working results. Simply put, gamification uses data to motivate performance. Gamification platforms capture the relevant data and put it to work to create engaging experiences that drive performance. In the HR community, companies are increasingly implementing gamification to drive higher employee engagement, boost productivity and encourage healthy habits
- Encourage the millennial's self-assuredness, "can-do" attitude, and positive personal self-image. Millennials are ready to take on change and development a new structure in the workplace for themselves and the team. The millennial mindset has given rise to human-centered technologies that are transforming the way humans of all ages live and work. Social networks and online presence can help you build your reputation, and millenials are using these platforms more than ever.
It is critical to understand that Millennials behave differently, and need different types of solutions to stay engaged at work so discussing the above points with them could be the first step in building that structure. Millennials now make up the majority of the workforce, so it’s vital that employers understand who they are and what makes them tick.
